One of the most practical skills any gold buyer in India can develop is the ability to convert gold prices between different purity levels. Whether you are comparing jewellery quotes, calculating the value of inherited gold, or verifying a buyback offer, understanding karat conversion puts you in a much stronger position.
The Basic Formula
All karat conversions start from the 24K (99.9% pure) rate. To find the rate for any other karat: Rate for X karat = (24K rate × X) ÷ 24. So if 24K gold is ₹1,54,765 per 10 grams, 22K = ₹1,54,765 × 22 ÷ 24 = ₹1,41,868 per 10 grams. 18K = ₹1,54,765 × 18 ÷ 24 = ₹1,16,074 per 10 grams. 14K = ₹1,54,765 × 14 ÷ 24 = ₹90,280 per 10 grams.
Why the Industry Uses Decimal Purity
In practice, jewellers and bullion dealers often use the decimal purity (0.916, 0.750, 0.585) rather than the fraction formula: 22K rate = 24K rate × 0.916, 18K rate = 24K rate × 0.750, 14K rate = 24K rate × 0.585. The results are the same — the decimal purity is simply a shorthand for the karat fraction.
Verifying a Jeweller's Quote
If a jeweller quotes you ₹1,42,500 per 10 grams for 22K gold and today's 24K rate is ₹1,54,765, you can quickly verify: ₹1,54,765 × 0.916 = ₹1,41,764. The jeweller is charging about ₹736 per 10 grams above the fair metal value — which is within a reasonable range for operational costs and margin.
