Gold Purity Comparison

How much actual gold is in each karat — and what that means for price per gram at today's rate.

Understanding Gold Karat and Purity

Karat is the unit used to measure the purity of gold. 24 karat gold is pure gold — 99.9% metal content with virtually no alloy. Every karat below 24 represents a proportional reduction in gold content. 22 karat gold contains 91.6% gold (22 ÷ 24 = 0.916), with the remaining 8.4% typically being silver or copper to add hardness. 18 karat contains 75% gold, and 14 karat contains 58.5%.

In India, the most widely purchased jewellery karat is 22K — it balances purity with the workability needed for intricate traditional designs. 18K is increasingly popular for designer and diamond-studded pieces. 24K is reserved for investment products — coins, bars, and gold ETFs — where purity is more important than durability.

The BIS Fineness System in India

In India, gold purity is also expressed as a three-digit fineness number under the BIS hallmarking system. The fineness number represents parts per thousand of pure gold. So 999 means 99.9% pure (24K), 916 means 91.6% pure (22K), 750 means 75% pure (18K), and 585 means 58.5% pure (14K). Every BIS-hallmarked piece of jewellery sold in India must display this three-digit fineness number alongside the six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number. When buying jewellery, always verify the fineness number matches what the jeweller quotes.

How to Convert Between Karats

The conversion is straightforward. To find the price of any karat from a known 24K price, multiply by the karat's purity fraction: 22K price = 24K price × 0.916; 18K price = 24K price × 0.750; 14K price = 24K price × 0.585. To go the other way — to find the equivalent 24K price from a known lower-karat price — divide by the purity fraction: if you know the 22K price per gram, divide by 0.916 to get the 24K price per gram. This calculator does all of this instantly for any weight and any starting karat.
