Karat is the unit used to measure the purity of gold. 24 karat gold is pure gold — 99.9% metal content with virtually no alloy. In India, gold purity is also expressed as a three-digit fineness number under the BIS hallmarking system. The fineness number represents parts per thousand of pure gold. Every BIS-hallmarked piece of jewellery sold in India must display this three-digit fineness number alongside the six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number. The conversion is straightforward. To find the price of any karat from a known 24K price, multiply by the karat's purity fraction: 22K price = 24K price × 0.916; 18K price = 24K price × 0.750; 14K price = 24K price × 0.585.
